Newcastle vs Arsenal: The Reason Behind the No Penalty Decision for Gabriel’s Handball

Why was there no penalty awarded to Newcastle for Gabriel’s handball?
Newcastle United faced disappointment when they were denied a penalty during their match against Arsenal on Sunday, despite their requests for a handball decision late in the game.
The Incident at St James’ Park
As Arsenal’s Gabriel slid in to challenge Anthony Elanga, the ball struck his outstretched arm while in the penalty area. Despite intense appeals from the Newcastle players, referee Jarred Gillett deemed the situation not to warrant a penalty, a decision upheld by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The Premier League Match Centre indicated on X: “The referee’s decision was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, determining the ball had deflected off Gabriel’s shin before making contact with his arm.”
Changes to Handball Rules in the Premier League
New guidelines introduced in the Premier League for the 2024 season clarify that not every instance of a player’s hand or arm making contact with the ball is considered an offense. These guidelines outline specific conditions under which a handball violation may not be penalized:
- Justifiable position/action
- Player playing the ball into their own arm
- Supportive arm usage
- Change in ball trajectory due to the same player’s touch
- Ball played by a teammate
- Proximity to the ball
Expert Opinions on the Decision
Pat Nevin, the former Chelsea winger, shared his thoughts on BBC Radio 5 Live, expressing initial belief that it should have been a penalty. However, he acknowledged the complexity of the situation upon further review.
Ellen White, a former striker for Manchester City, elaborated: “Elanga was about to take a shot, and the ball deflected off Gabriel’s shin and onto his arm. Consequently, it was the correct call by the referee, as confirmed by VAR.”
