Newcastle-Sunderland Match Interrupted Due to Alleged Racism Toward Geertruida

Investigation Announced by Newcastle

Newcastle United has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation following an incident during the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, where a report emerged regarding racist abuse directed at visiting player Lutsharel Geertruida by an individual in the stadium crowd at St James’ Park.

Referee Anthony Taylor halted the Premier League match for approximately three minutes to adhere to the league’s on-field anti-discrimination protocols. The pause occurred in the 52nd minute while Newcastle’s Sven Botman was being treated for an injury. Sunderland’s captain, Granit Xhaka, approached the referee to discuss the matter. After consulting with Geertruida, Xhaka, and both coaching staffs, the match was resumed.

The Premier League has confirmed that a full inquiry into the matter will take place, and a spokesperson for Northumbria Police asserted that they are “aware of a report of discriminatory abuse.”

In an official statement, Newcastle expressed their awareness of the incident, emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy toward discrimination. They affirmed their commitment to work alongside authorities to ensure that any individuals involved are identified and held accountable.

Sunderland Commends Geertruida’s Courage

In response to the incident, Sunderland released a statement expressing solidarity with Lutsharel Geertruida, praising him for his courage and leadership in reporting the incident to match officials.

The statement condemned racism as intolerable, underscoring that it has no place in football or society at large. Sunderland also acknowledged Newcastle’s statement and called for accountability for those responsible. They emphasized that such behavior cannot be tolerated under any circumstances and reaffirmed their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive atmosphere in football.

Sunderland’s manager, Regis le Bris, noted that Geertruida appears to be handling the situation well and stressed the importance of addressing and properly managing incidents like this. Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, reiterated the club’s stance against racism and the intention to thoroughly investigate the matter further.

At the time of the incident, Newcastle was leading the game 1-0, but the match concluded with Sunderland claiming a 2-1 victory, thanks to a late goal from Brian Brobbey.

Additionally, it was reported that the police made one arrest before the match due to reports of disturbances among fans. Northumbria Police indicated their awareness of videos circulating online that captured Newcastle and Sunderland supporters taunting each other, but overall, stated that the situation remained under control.
