Yan Diomande’s Inspiring Journey to RB Leipzig
Overcoming Challenges to Reach the Bundesliga
Yan Diomande, a promising talent in both Bundesliga and global football, shared insights about his challenging path to joining RB Leipzig. In an exclusive interview, the Ivory Coast winger opened up about the struggles he faced during his early years.
Early Life and Passion for Football
“I was born in Abidjan, specifically in a neighborhood known as Sicogi. My family situation wasn’t ideal, as my father moved to France. Consequently, I chose to leave home to pursue my passion for football,” Diomande expressed, discussing his motivations during his formative years.
Growing Up in a Football-Crazed Environment
“The love for the game is immense in our community, with many playing on the streets. However, we typically didn’t have proper footwear; we played in regular shoes. It was only because someone helped buy football boots for me, as my family didn’t have the means,” he recounted.
Cherishing Childhood Memories
While reflecting on his early life, the 19-year-old looked through nostalgic photographs displayed by Leipzig, including images of his youth football team in Ivory Coast and moments of triumph after winning his first trophy in the USA. “I still connect with my childhood teammates through a group chat. Many are now professionals; one of them plays for Sunderland, another in Belgium for Anderlecht, while others are active in the Ivorian league,” he noted.
Support from a Mentor
“Bamba was instrumental in our journey at the academy, looking after around 40 of us students. During breaks, I stayed at his home because my own living situation was cramped and challenging. I left my family to follow my dream,” Diomande said, highlighting the support he received during his formative years.
The Move to the USA
With a hint of nostalgia, Diomande laughed while recalling his first day in the USA, noting, “My mother was eager for updates, and I sent her a picture. It wasn’t easy being away from home, with the significant time difference adding to the challenge. Nevertheless, it was a valuable experience.”
Embracing New Opportunities
During his seven to eight months in the USA, Diomande took it upon himself to learn English via Duolingo, as his roommates spoke both English and French. However, he faced difficulties traveling to America due to visa requirements and high ticket costs.
Transitioning to Professional Football
When it came time to sign his first professional contract in Spain, Diomande experienced a whirlwind of emotions. He explained, “I wasn’t familiar with how transfers worked; my academy mentor informed me about Leganés’ interest. I thought, ‘Why not? It’s a professional team,’ and jumped at the chance.”
Facing the Giants
Nervous yet excited, Diomande recalled his first game against Real Madrid. “I couldn’t sleep before or after the game. I was called to join the first team just two days prior, and it felt surreal,” he said, reminiscing about the pressure of the moment.
Celebrating Milestones
Diomande became visibly moved when reflecting on his first goal as a professional, a moment filled with joy during a match against RCD Espanyol. “I dedicated that goal to my sister, whom I cherished and lost unexpectedly. Life can be harsh,” he shared, conveying his emotional tribute.
A Bright Future Ahead
In July 2025, RB Leipzig made a €20 million offer to acquire Diomande. After a brief acclimatization period in Germany, he has made a notable impact, amassing 11 goals and 8 assists across 29 games in various competitions. His achievements undoubtedly make his family and sister proud as he continues to excel on the field.
