Haris Tabaković: From Uncertainty to World Cup Glory
A Moment of Triumph in Zenica
At 11:29 p.m. in the icy conditions of Zenica, Haris Tabaković readies himself to take a crucial penalty in the World Cup playoff against Italy. Standing before him is Gianluigi Donnarumma, regarded as one of this generation’s elite goalkeepers. After taking a final deep breath, the Gladbach striker sends the ball flying into the net, striking it powerfully beneath the crossbar. As he lets out a triumphant roar, he flexes his muscles and beats his chest in jubilation.
A Nation’s Glory
Following four successful penalty strikes, Tabaković’s homeland secures its place in the World Cup, leaving Italy heartbroken. His earlier goal had dramatically thrust the match into extra time. Now, at 31, Tabaković is on his way to the World Cup—a situation that would have seemed improbable a few years back, when it appeared that his opportunities for a thriving career had slipped away.
Rebuilding After Injury
In the spring of 2020, Tabaković found himself without a team after sustaining a torn ACL while playing for Hungarian side Diósgyőri. Although he was a free agent, securing a new club proved challenging, with many teams hesitant to take on the potential risks exacerbated by the financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
A New Opportunity
It was during this challenging period that Alexander Kiene entered the scene. At that time, Kiene managed Austria Lustenau in the Austrian second division and recognized Tabaković’s potential. Nevertheless, Tabaković was initially doubtful, as he wanted to avoid a second division move. Kiene recounts in an interview that, “Haris was initially skeptical.”
Embracing Change
After engaging in deep discussions, Tabaković opted to trust the situation, realizing he needed to kickstart his career after being sidelined for nearly a year. This decision set him on a path of remarkable transformation. Kiene identified three key factors behind this success: first, an emphasis on mental resilience, including numerous one-on-one dialogues and involving a mental coach to support Tabaković in embracing leadership roles.
Physical Transformation and Tactical Adjustment
Next, Tabaković dedicated himself to enhancing his physical condition to regain confidence in his body post-injury, significantly increasing his muscle mass in the process. The final piece was adopting a tactical approach that suited his strengths: “We defended high, had short distances to the goal, and worked the ball into the box using plenty of passes and crosses,” Kiene elaborates. The synergy created a mutually beneficial scenario for all involved.
Stellar Performance
The stats speak volumes: over 48 competitive matches for Lustenau, Tabaković netted an impressive 46 goals and provided 11 assists. This performance elevated his career, leading him from Austria Wien to Hertha BSC, where he finished as the top scorer in the 2. Bundesliga. Following a stint at Hoffenheim, he found himself on loan at Gladbach.
Continued Success at Gladbach
During his time at Gladbach, Tabaković made a solid impact, scoring 11 goals and assisting four times in 26 matches, making him the team’s leading scorer this season. Although he experienced a five-match Bundesliga drought, his recent performances, particularly for the national team, reaffirmed that he remains a formidable threat in front of goal.
Dedication to the Game
This evolution hasn’t surprised his dedicated mentor, Kiene, who attributes his success to Tabaković’s professionalism and passion for football. Outside the pitch, Tabaković invests in his future by pursuing education in FIFA sports management courses and delving into entrepreneurial literature.
Looking Ahead
As Tabaković returns from international duty filled with confidence, his attention shifts back to the Bundesliga and Borussia. In an upcoming match against Heidenheim, he aims to break his scoring drought. A victory would not only ease relegation worries but also bolster his chances of securing a permanent position in Mönchengladbach. Though the club currently holds no purchase option, a lasting move is still a possibility, as he remains under contract with Hoffenheim until 2027.
Contemplating the Future
When asked about his future, Tabaković expressed uncertainty, stating to ‘RP online’, “For now, it’s still an open and honest ‘I don’t know’. There haven’t been any talks, so I really can’t say anything about it.” He acknowledges the potential for change in the final eight games of the season, which could influence the decisions of sporting directors.
The Desire for Stability
Despite the uncertainty, Tabaković revealed a yearning for some degree of stability as he prepares for additional upcoming commitments—particularly with Edin Džeko and the national team.
