Bayern Munich to Host Champions League Final in 2028

Bayern Munich’s home ground will welcome another Champions League final in 2028, while the 2029 final is set to be contested between London’s Wembley Stadium and the newly renovated Camp Nou in Barcelona.

UEFA announced on Friday the array of interested bidders from its member associations, indicating that the long-awaited final in New York will be postponed until at least 2030.

Bid Details

“There is no obligation in the declarations of interest, with final proposals required to be submitted along with bid documents by June 10,” UEFA stated.

Munich stands as the sole bid for the 2028 final. The venue previously hosted the final last season, while Wembley served as the location for the 2024 final. Barcelona has not held a final since 1999, when Manchester United achieved a memorable victory over Bayern with two late goals.

The ongoing renovations at Camp Nou are expected to increase its capacity to 105,000, making it the largest stadium in Europe.

The UEFA executive committee will announce the chosen hosts for all club competition finals for 2028 and 2029 next September.

Europa League Bidders

Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, along with Juventus—participants in the abandoned Super League project of 2021—are also vying to host European finals.

The Italian soccer federation has proposed Juventus Stadium, which holds 41,000 seats, to host either a Europa League or Conference League final in the upcoming years. This stadium previously welcomed the Europa League final in 2014 when Juventus reached the semifinals.

Romania’s National Stadium in Bucharest is in the running for the Europa League finals, alongside the French soccer federation, which is still considering whether to submit bids for Parc des Princes in Paris or the stadium in Lyon.

Additionally, two new stadiums are entering the bid: the upcoming Serbian national arena in Belgrade for 2028 and Ankara’s 19 Mayıs Stadium in Turkey for 2029.

Conference League Candidates

The Puskas Arena, with a capacity of 67,000, is also a contender for hosting the Conference League final in either 2028 or 2029, potentially becoming the largest venue for this third-tier competition that was introduced in 2021. The first two finals saw attendance numbers fall below 20,000 in Tirana and Prague.

Additional contenders include Lille’s home stadium, Arena Gdansk in Poland, and two potential venues from Kazakhstan, which has yet to finalize a decision between Astana and Kairat Almaty’s stadium. Helsinki Olympic Stadium in Finland is also in the mix for the 2029 final.

Women’s Champions League Final

OL Lyon’s stadium, which hosted the 2019 Women’s World Cup final won by the United States, is also in the running for the prestigious women’s final in either 2028 or 2029. St. Jakob Park in Basel, which hosted this year’s Women’s European Championship final, is another competitor.

The 2028 bids include the home stadiums of Athletic Club and Galatasaray in Istanbul, while the 2029 candidates comprise Ireland’s national soccer stadium in Dublin and Wales’ stadium in Cardiff, which was the site of the men’s Champions League final in 2017.
