Mourinho Set to Rejoin Benfica
Jose Mourinho has reached an agreement to take the helm at Benfica.
Contract Offer Accepted
Reports from Sky Sports indicate that Mourinho has agreed to a two-year deal with the club, with an official announcement likely to follow shortly.
Coaching Changes at Benfica
Following the departure of former manager Bruno Lage, Rui Costa, the president of Benfica, stated that a new appointment would be made by the weekend.
Mourinho’s Coaching Journey
Mourinho began his coaching career at Benfica before moving on to manage Porto and later Chelsea. He arrived in Portugal on Wednesday, clearly signaling his return to the football scene.
As he was greeted by fans while donning a Benfica scarf upon his arrival, Mourinho reflected on the opportunity in a media interaction: “I have nothing to convey to you.”
“I was asked about my interest before boarding the plane, and I replied that I might be interested,” he elaborated. “Benfica officially contacted me, expressing their desire to have a conversation upon my return to Portugal. If I take on the role at Benfica, it won’t be a celebration of my career or a nostalgic homecoming.”
Mourinho added, “I departed my last position just four weeks ago, and if you inquire whether I anticipated being without a coaching role until season’s end, that’s against my nature. I was eager to be involved. I wouldn’t want to accept a position at a club that didn’t feel right for me, simply because I’m passionate about my work.”
“When the option to coach Benfica arose, I didn’t hesitate, saying, ‘I’m intrigued; I would like this opportunity.'”
Negotiations Underway
On Thursday morning, Benfica officially confirmed that negotiations with Mourinho are in progress.
A brief statement from the club read: “Sport Lisboa e Benfica – Futebol, SAD announces that discussions are taking place for the hiring of coach José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, which are anticipated to conclude soon.”
