Mourinho Addresses Financial Concerns at Benfica
Benfica’s head coach, Jose Mourinho, has rejected assertions that the club has jeopardized its financial stability by bringing him on board.
Mourinho Denies Salary Claims
Rumors have circulated that Mourinho’s contract is valued at £30 million over a two-year period, a statement he firmly denies.
He stated, “Had I chosen to remain at home until the season concludes, I would have earned more than what I currently make at Benfica. It’s that straightforward.”
Passion for the Game
Mourinho added, “If I had spent time with my family, stayed in London, brought them over here, traveled to the Algarve, and enjoyed some leisure trips, my earnings would have been higher. Currently, I am not financially ahead; in fact, I am in deficit.”
He continued, “My motivation stems from a genuine passion for work. I longed to compete for what Benfica represents: the pursuit of the title. This was not an option for me in Rome, nor in Fenerbahce.”
A Unique Opportunity
“This is a one-of-a-kind chance for me, both as a coach and as an individual. Staying home isn’t an appealing option for me,” Mourinho emphasized.
He elaborated, “Challenging myself, taking risks, and navigating the highs and lows of winning and losing invigorate me; they push me outside of my comfort zone.”
Mourinho concluded, “When a falsehood is repeated frequently enough, it can become accepted as truth. In this instance, the reality is: had I opted to remain at home until July, my financial situation would have been better than it is now with Benfica.”
