Morocco Mark U20 World Cup Return With Victory Over Spain

Morocco’s U20 national team announced their return to the global stage in style, defeating Spain 2-0 in their opening FIFA U20 World Cup Group C clash on Sunday at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago, Chile.

Making their first appearance at the tournament in more than 20 years, the North Africans soaked up pressure in the first half, where Spain controlled 67% possession and registered 10 shots compared to Morocco’s eight.

Despite the dominance, the teams went into the break level at 0-0.

The game turned on its head in the 54th minute when Tassir Zabiri stunned the Spaniards with a composed finish from the center of the box to hand Morocco the lead.

Just four minutes later, Othmane Maamma’s clever assist found Gessime Yassine, who doubled the advantage with a precise left-footed strike into the top corner.

Spain pushed for a response with a flurry of attacks and set-pieces, but Morocco’s disciplined backline stood tall to secure a memorable victory.

The result not only gave Morocco three crucial points in a tough group that also features Brazil and Mexico but also highlighted the team’s intent to make a mark after qualifying for the tournament as runners-up at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations
