Morocco Edge South Korea to Reach U20 World Cup Quarterfinals

Morocco secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Korea to book their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 U20 World Cup.

The Lion Cubs displayed quality and composure, outclassing their Asian opponents in a spirited round-of-16 contest.

Morocco started the match with confidence and took control early.

Their pressure paid off in the 8th minute when defender Shin Min-Ha deflected the ball into his own net, giving Morocco a deserved lead.

The early goal boosted the African side’s momentum, forcing South Korea to retreat and rely on counterattacks.

The Asian Tigers thought they had a lifeline late in the first half when the referee awarded them a penalty, but VAR correctly overturned the decision.

Morocco went into the break ahead 1-0 after a disciplined first-half performance.

The North Africans continued their dominance after the restart. Their pressing and passing rhythm unsettled South Korea, and the second goal arrived in the 58th minute.

Othmane Maamma provided a precise assist for Yassir Zabiri, who finished clinically to double Morocco’s advantage.

The goal underlined Morocco’s control and teamwork, leaving their opponents struggling to find answers.

However, South Korea refused to give up. The Asian side grew more dangerous in the final stages, increasing their attacking tempo and testing Morocco’s defence.

Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when Tae-Won Kim converted a penalty in the 90th + 6 minute. Despite the late scare, Morocco held firm to seal a deserved 2-1 win.

The result sends Morocco into the quarter-finals as the last remaining African team in the competition.

The Lion Cubs will now face the United States on 12 October 2025 at Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua as they continue their remarkable journey.
