Nottingham Forest Falls to Midtjylland in Europa League
Nottingham Forest faced another setback in the Europa League, as a late header from Cho Gue-Sung led Midtjylland to a 1-0 victory at the City Ground in the first leg of the Round of 16.
A Repeat of History
Forest aimed to rectify their earlier defeat to Midtjylland, who previously triumphed 3-2 in Nottingham last October. However, they were unable to reverse their fortunes, leaving the Reds behind as they head into the return match next week.
Following the match, the Midtjylland players celebrated enthusiastically with their supporters for several minutes, with their festivities continuing in the locker room alongside loud music.
Pereira Remains Hopeful
Midtjylland remains unbeaten on home turf across all competitions, but Forest’s manager, Vitor Pereira, insisted that the tie is far from over and expressed belief that the Danish side celebrated prematurely.
He commented, “In the end, they created two chances and managed to score once. We are only at half-time; it seems like they think they’ve finished the match, but it’s still ongoing. Now we must focus on recovery, both physically and mentally, as another challenge awaits us for the second leg.”
Frustration on the Field
The home team struggled to breach the defenses of goalkeeper Elias Rafn Olafsson, who made numerous critical saves, keeping the score level at halftime.
Adverse weather conditions in the second half presented challenges for both teams, yet Midtjylland continued to thwart the Premier League side, who registered 22 shots throughout the match.
While the Danish visitors rarely attacked, they still managed to pose a threat, with the crossbar lending a helping hand to Forest before Cho’s decisive header found its way past keeper Matz Sels.
Pereira stated, “I can’t criticize my players for their effort; they did everything possible to win. We took 22 shots on goal. A draw would have been a poor outcome given our performance. Losing is tough… a challenging day, but we need to maintain our spirit and mindset as we recuperate.”
He added, “Of course, I feel frustrated. Yet, I’m proud of the team for demonstrating the spirit we strive for.”
Looking Ahead
Forest’s last defeat against Midtjylland occurred under previous manager Ange Postecoglou, and Pereira’s recent appointment couldn’t shift the outcome this time around.
This latest result extends Forest’s winless streak to five matches across all competitions. They will now turn their focus to the Premier League battle against Fulham on Sunday, before attempting to alter their European trajectory next Thursday in Denmark.
