McInnes Criticizes Wilson for Choosing Tottenham Over Hearts
Hearts’ McInnes Voices Concerns Over Wilson’s Loan to Spurs
Hearts head coach Derek McInnes has expressed his disappointment regarding James Wilson’s recent loan transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
Wilson’s Move to Tottenham
Wilson has officially signed with Spurs until the end of the current season, with the arrangement including an option for a permanent transfer.

The 18-year-old forward has netted eight goals in 45 matches since he made his first-team debut last season but has found it challenging to secure regular playing time this year.
McInnes’ Perspective on the Transfer
“James was eager to leave, and it’s not beneficial to retain a player who becomes discontented,” McInnes remarked. “I made it clear that I couldn’t assure him of game time given the current circumstances. I had informed both him and his agent that my desire was for him to remain here, fight for his position, and contribute to the team.”
“I suggested that we could explore a loan option within Scotland to increase his playtime, potentially allowing for a recall—trying to strike a balance that benefits everyone involved.”
“However, the Tottenham opportunity shifted his focus. Initially, there was interest from Arsenal, but that cooled off and then Spurs came forward.”
“I don’t believe this is the optimal path for him. Ultimately, he will be engaging in academy-level football, which I feel he has outgrown. Nonetheless, this was a move he was eager to pursue.”
“I wish him every success because he’s a talented young man. We will monitor how things unfold while I must focus on the players committed to our cause and eager to contribute.”
