McGinn Explores Evertons Proposal; Villa Leaderships Role in Upcoming Contract Negotiations

McGinn discusses Everton offer; Villa owners' input ahead of penning new deal

McGinn’s New Deal Reinforced by Club’s Support

Aston Villa’s skipper, John McGinn, has disclosed that the backing from the club’s ownership played a significant role in his decision to extend his contract this week.

Everton’s Interest in McGinn

During the summer transfer window, Everton expressed interest in acquiring McGinn, a move that he appreciated.

McGinn reflected on the situation, stating,

I didn’t seriously consider leaving. It was somewhat encouraging to know that clubs were interested, particularly at my age. However, most teams recognized that we were in a position to sell during this transfer window, meaning no player was entirely off the market, but no one was off-limits for a transfer either.

A Clear Message from the Club

The Aston Villa captain shared that the club made it abundantly clear he was not for sale.

From the very outset, the club communicated that I was not on the market and that I held significant value here. As captain, my role was highly regarded, and they ensured I understood this.

McGinn recently signed a contract that extends to 2028. During the negotiation process, he engaged in discussions with manager Unai Emery, club executive Damien Vidagny, and owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

He added,

The message was straightforward from the beginning. Once I received that communication, I felt completely at ease. I had trust in what was communicated by the manager, Damien, Nassef, and Wes. They all expressed a desire for me to stay and acknowledged that I still had much to contribute to the team.

The Commitment of the Club

He emphasized the importance of feeling valued, noting,

While it’s flattering to receive interest from other clubs, feeling cherished and appreciated here made it an easy decision to focus on my game, train hard, and trust that the club would handle my contract situation.

McGinn also praised the club’s integrity in following through on their assurances.

In today’s football culture, it’s common for clubs to make promises that aren’t kept. However, they honored their word and prioritized resolving my situation after ensuring all necessary matters for the club’s future were addressed. Thankfully, we were able to finalize everything.
