Matanović Returns to Haunt Old Team as Freiburg Rallies to Overcome St. Pauli at Millerntor

Freiburg Clinches Victory with Second-Half Surge Against St. Pauli

After a lively start from St. Pauli, Freiburg showcased their skill after the interval, with Igor Matanović playing a key role in securing an essential win against his former team.

Sinani Celebrates 50th Appearance with a Goal

St. Pauli began the match on a high note, taking the lead in the 23rd minute off a set piece. Following a corner, Matthias Ginter lost a crucial aerial challenge to Ando, allowing Danel Sinani to seize the opportunity. The midfielder made no mistakes, scoring to put the hosts ahead 1-0 in his 50th Bundesliga match.

The first half lacked significant goal-scoring opportunities, but St. Pauli impressed with their aggressive and energetic play, which hindered Freiburg’s ability to find their rhythm. It wasn’t until about the 35-minute mark that Julian Schuster’s side began to gain momentum.

Freiburg Shifts the Momentum After Halftime

The second half marked a turning point, with Freiburg emerging as the more dominant team. Ginter, keen to make amends for his earlier mistake, started to make his presence felt.

In the 65th minute, it was Ginter who initiated the equalizer by distributing the ball to the right flank. The ball made its way into the box to Vincenzo Grifo, whose shot was diverted into the net by Matanović, leveling the score at 1-1.

VAR Intervenes but Freiburg Stays Resilient

Freiburg appeared to take the lead in the 76th minute when Cyriaque Irié scored, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review.

Nevertheless, the visitors maintained their offensive pressure, and just two minutes later, they found the net again.

Matanović Secures the Winning Goal

In the 78th minute, Matanović displayed his instinct for goal scoring once more. A loose ball found its way near the goal line, and the former St. Pauli player was quickest to react, slamming it home to put Freiburg ahead 2-1.

Despite their efforts, St. Pauli struggled to regain their first-half momentum. Their offensive intensity diminished, and opportunities to score became few and far between as Freiburg maintained control in the closing minutes.

A late attempt by Derry Scherhant in stoppage time was quickly ruled out for offside, ensuring no last-minute excitement.

Freiburg Narrows the Gap to European Qualification

The match concluded with Freiburg triumphant at 2-1, leaving them just one point shy of Eintracht Frankfurt, who occupy the eighth spot.

A comeback built on determination and superior second-half performance solidifies Freiburg’s position in the league, while St. Pauli is left to reflect on a missed chance at home.
