Marc Guehi: Crystal Palace and Manchester City Finalize Agreement for England Central Defender
Manchester City Finalizes £20m Acquisition of Crystal Palace’s Captain Guehi
City Set to Welcome Guehi
Manchester City has reached an agreement in principle to recruit Marc Guehi, the captain of Crystal Palace, for £20 million this month. The discussions gained momentum as injuries struck City’s defense, specifically impacting players Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias.
Guehi, aged 25, has been associated with a number of prominent European clubs and is slated to be out of contract this upcoming summer. He was close to joining Liverpool last year. Recent reports indicate that negotiations with City have sped up over the last day, with Guehi anticipated to sign a long-term contract this month.
While personal terms have not yet been officially settled, there are no indications that this will pose a problem.
City has already made a significant acquisition this transfer window, bringing in Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £62.5 million.
Manager Confirmation and Future Plans
The news of Guehi’s potential transfer coincides with Palace manager Oliver Glasner’s announcement that he will depart the club when his contract concludes in June. Glasner noted that Guehi’s prospective exit had “zero impact” on his decision to leave, as he had made this choice months earlier.
Although Glasner wished for Guehi to remain until the season’s end, a deal between City and Palace for the defender was finalized late Thursday night. Glasner communicated his decision not to renew his contract to Palace chairman Steve Parish in October, but it appears that the container for Guehi’s transfer acted as a catalyst for Glasner to confirm his exit plans.
Situation Regarding Injuries
City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, declined to provide comment on Guehi’s transfer during a press briefing, simply stating, “nothing to say.” Meanwhile, Glasner indicated, “My understanding is the deal with Marc is in the final stages,” confirming that Guehi would not participate in the squad facing Sunderland in the Premier League that Saturday.
Earlier, Glasner had mentioned that Palace would consider selling Guehi in January if their asking price was met. Guehi famously led Palace to their inaugural major trophy last season in the FA Cup against City and also secured a Community Shield victory over Liverpool at the onset of this season.
His transfer was nearly completed in September for £35 million but fell through at the last minute despite Guehi having begun a medical examination.
Having moved to Palace from Chelsea in 2021, Guehi established himself as a key player for England, contributing significantly to the national team’s journey to the Euro 2024 final. Recently, Gvardiol underwent surgery for a broken tibia, and Dias is sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks with a hamstring injury.
In the upcoming match, City is poised to face their rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Palace’s Sentiments on Guehi’s Move
Glasner acknowledged Guehi’s professionalism throughout the period of speculation surrounding his transfer. However, he also stressed that once a player is inclined to move, “a deal will happen.” He commented, “Everyone hoped Marc would stay forever. I spoke to him; of course, that remains confidential.”
“Marc demonstrated his commitment during the summer and the entire autumn, proving he was dedicated to the team and Crystal Palace. I wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors as he is at the outset of what promises to be a remarkable career. He is truly an outstanding individual.”
