Manchester United’s Transfer Moves: Late Striker Signing and Left-Back Target
United’s Striker Pursuit and Missed Targets
Manchester United is exploring the possibility of bringing in a striker before the transfer window closes this month, but they have recently lost out on a promising candidate. Meanwhile, the club has identified an intriguing left-back from the Bundesliga as a potential addition.
The overall mood within the club has been notably upbeat following Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager, guiding the team to consecutive wins against Manchester City and Liverpool.
Despite this positive momentum, there is a consensus that United requires a substantial squad overhaul to compete effectively for titles across all competitions. The need for a new striker has become particularly pronounced.
Recently, Joshua Zirkzee’s potential departure has been a hot topic, with inquiries made by the Red Devils regarding one of Ligue 1’s noteworthy forwards. Unfortunately, it appears they will not secure this player, as he has committed to a move elsewhere.
Deal Agreed for a Striker
As United contemplates a striker signing, uncertainties remain regarding Zirkzee, who has attracted interest from Roma and other teams. The club has indicated they would only permit Zirkzee’s mid-season exit if they can bring in a replacement. One player attracting their interest is Rennes striker Mohamed Kader Meite.
United has discussed the possibility of acquiring Meite and has reached out to his representatives. Reports suggest that several Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Brentford, and Brighton, have been sending scouts to evaluate the young talent.
However, amid this Premier League interest, Saudi club Al-Hilal seems poised to win the race for Meite’s signature. Initially hesitant about a move to Saudi Arabia, Meite has reportedly been convinced to join Al-Hilal, as confirmed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who stated that an agreement has been reached with Rennes, with a fee around €30 million set for the 18-year-old.
Given these developments, Manchester United will need to redirect their search for a striker ahead of the transfer deadline. There are indications that they may rebuff any outgoing advances for Zirkzee, choosing instead to retain him.
New Left-Back Acquisition in Focus
In other transfer news, Manchester United is keen to recruit a left-back and has sent senior scouts to Germany to watch Nathaniel Brown from Eintracht Frankfurt. Although Brown is contracted with the club until 2030, insiders expect he may leave this summer.
The anticipated transfer fee could exceed £40 million (€46 million / $55 million), as Frankfurt braces for interest from multiple Premier League teams. The 22-year-old talent has contributed one goal and six assists in 27 appearances across all competitions this season and has already earned two caps for Germany, with expectations of further development.
United has shown significant interest and is evaluating a left-back signing, especially considering Patrick Dorgu’s recent performances as a winger. They will continue to monitor Brown closely, determining how to proceed with their interest as the summer transfer window approaches. Tottenham is also reported to be interested, and more clubs may enter the fray for Brown’s signature.
Key Midfield Targets Identified
Additionally, Manchester United has identified three primary midfield targets ahead of a significant summer rebuild. Concurrently, five players they had been monitoring have been ruled out by club executives.
Matt Hargreaves, the head of negotiations, has been in discussions with the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, regarding the merits of signing a new midfielder this transfer window. The five players previously considered — James Garner, Joao Gomes, Tyler Adams, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ruben Neves — could have been available this month, but United has opted for a more cautious approach, planning to pursue one of their top three targets during the summer window.
