Mamelodi Sundowns Draw Nigerian Side Remo Stars In CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns begin their CAF Champions League campaign with a tough test against Nigerian title holders Remo Stars, with the opening leg scheduled for 17th October in Nigeria.

The return game will take place on 24th October in Tshwane.

Remo Stars head into the tie full of confidence after brushing aside US Zilimandjou of Comoros 5-0 on aggregate in the first preliminary round, including a dominant 4-0 home win in Abeokuta.

Founded in 2004 by Kunle Soname, the “Sky Blue Stars” have quickly risen through Nigerian football ranks.

After brief spells of relegation and promotion, they achieved a historic first NPFL title last season, finishing ten points clear of Rivers United.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, this stage marks their official entry into the competition, as their high CAF ranking and last season’s run to the final granted them a bye in the opening round.

Miguel Cardoso’s men, however, will need to be at their best to handle the intensity of West African football on Remo’s turf.

Meanwhile, the South African champions have strengthened their midfield with two Portuguese acquisitions.

Nuno Santos joined from Vitória Guimarães for a reported R20 million, while fellow 26-year-old Miguel Reisinho signed as a free agent after leaving Boavista.
