Mainz Players Humorously Attribute Victory Over Werder Bremen to the Pigeon

"Mainz Players Humorously Attribute Victory Over Werder Bremen to the Pigeon"

Werder Bremen Faces Setback Against Mainz

A Tough Loss for Bremen

The players of Werder Bremen expressed disappointment following a 2-0 loss to Mainz 05, recognizing that lapses in focus were detrimental in their fight against relegation.

Mainz opened the scoring early and added another goal shortly after halftime, capitalizing on critical moments when the Bremen defense faltered.

Friedl’s Call for Better Focus

“We cannot afford to lose concentration so quickly after the match starts,” Friedl commented. He emphasized the need to maintain focus, regardless of distractions, which he believes has contributed to their precarious position in the league standings.

Despite having significant control over much of the game, Bremen struggled to convert possession into scoring opportunities. Midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt acknowledged that their inability to take advantage of chances was costly.

“We limited Mainz’s opportunities, yet they seized the two chances they had,” said Bittencourt. “We were not precise enough in front of goal and failed to capitalize on our efforts.”

However, the seasoned player urged his teammates to stay calm as the season progresses toward its critical stages.

“We anticipated a tough season, and we should not be discouraged by today’s result,” he added.

Mainz Gains Confidence

Conversely, Mainz’s victory was a significant morale booster as they aim to distance themselves from the relegation threat.

Right-back Phillipp Mwene, who provided the assist for the first goal, spoke lightheartedly about an unusual incident involving a pigeon that briefly distracted Bremen’s Marco Grüll. “The pigeon had been on the pitch prior to that moment,” Mwene remarked with a chuckle. “It may not have been the main reason for our opening goal, but it certainly contributed to the distraction.”

Despite the playful narrative, Mwene emphasized the importance of the win and the increasing self-belief within the Mainz squad. “We are aware that we have the potential to compete in every match, and we are heading into the upcoming fixtures with optimism. Today’s clean sheet is promising for the future.”

Nebel Reflects on the Team’s Spirit

Goalscorer Paul Nebel also had a humorous take on the pigeon incident while highlighting the team’s robust mindset under head coach Urs Fischer.

“The pigeon was an amusing sight, and perhaps it brought us some luck today,” Nebel joked. “Maybe we should take it back with us to Mainz!”

“Our intensity, both in possession and out of it, is commendable under coach Fischer. We maintain our effort until the final whistle and commit fully to every play,” he added.

Additionally, he expressed anticipation for the return of a crucial teammate.

“We look forward to Nadiem Amiri’s return; he brings an irreplaceable quality to our team. Although we managed well today without him, his presence will only strengthen us further,” he concluded.
