Lucas Paqueta of West Ham Confesses Desire to Rejoin Flamengo Following Betting Controversy

Lucas Paqueta, a 28-year-old midfielder for West Ham, has revealed that he sought a move back to Flamengo this summer following the turmoil surrounding his betting scandal in the Premier League.

Paqueta faced spot-fixing allegations earlier in the season, but he was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing. However, The FA issued a warning due to his lack of cooperation during the investigation.

The FA had accused him of purposefully getting cautioned in four matches to influence betting outcomes, but an independent review dismissed the claims in July 2025, stating there was not enough evidence to support the accusations.

The controversy nearly derailed potential negotiations with Manchester City in 2023, leading Paqueta to express a desire to leave West Ham this summer.

Despite having the opportunity to continue playing normally after the investigation’s conclusion, Paqueta said,

The second moment that I had discussions with Flamengo, incredibly enough, was when I already knew I could continue playing normally.

Desire to Reunite with Flamengo

During these talks, he felt a growing urge to return to Flamengo.

Maybe I shouldn’t even be saying this, but I had some conversations with Filipe, who is a friend, in addition to the work he’s doing at Flamengo,

he admitted.

Paqueta explained,

I really expressed my desire to return and also showed it to my agents. It was a challenging decision because I’m 28 years old, I’m very young, and I still have a lot of market value out here.

Despite his strong feelings, he ultimately decided to respect his current club, stating,

I’ve been doing my job well, but it was a very strong desire. I tried very hard, but unfortunately, once again, I decided to respect my club, a club that supported me, and for which I have immense affection.

I understood that it wasn’t the right moment, but I know the doors will always be open for me. I am confident that at some point, this return will happen.
