Luca Zidane Receives National Team Call-Up

Luca Zidane, the son of the renowned French football star Zinedine Zidane, has been selected to join the Algerian national team for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualification matches against Somalia and Uganda.

Background on the Player

Originally hailing from Aix-en-Provence in southern France, Luca has represented France at various age levels. However, he recently decided to commit his international career to Algeria.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is among three goalkeepers announced in a 26-man squad by Algeria’s coach, Vladimir Petkovic, ahead of the matches scheduled for October 9 and October 14.

As the second oldest of four siblings, all of whom progressed through the Real Madrid youth system, Luca currently plays for Granada in the Spanish second division.

Over his career, he made two appearances for Real Madrid and has played in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano. In 2022, he stepped down a division to join Eibar before signing with Granada in 2024.

Luca’s grandparents on his father’s side are from the Kabylie region of Algeria.

Historical Context

Zinedine Zidane famously scored two goals in France’s 1998 World Cup final win against Brazil and was later infamously sent off for a headbutt in the 2006 final, which ended with Italy triumphing in a penalty shootout.

Current Standing of the Team

Algeria is leading Group G in their African qualification journey and is just one victory away from securing a spot in next year’s World Cup to be held in North and Central America.
