Liverpools Dominik Szoboszlai Addresses Mo Salah and Comments on Disrespectful Remarks
Szoboszlai Discusses Salah’s Future at Liverpool
Ongoing Communication
Dominik Szoboszlai revealed he has been in regular contact with Mohamed Salah, speaking “almost every day” while the striker participated in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Despite their connection, Szoboszlai has opted not to comment on Salah’s future with Liverpool.
Salah’s Return and Uncertainty
Salah is back in the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League encounter against Marseille after returning from international duty. However, uncertainty looms over the forward’s future, particularly following a candid interview where he expressed tensions with manager Arne Slot. Szoboszlai maintained, “That’s between me and him. He will come back, and we will continue. Ultimately, it’s a decision for the manager and the club.”
When asked about their communication since Salah left the team on December 15, Szoboszlai confirmed, “Yes, almost every day. We talk about everything. I follow him, and I assume he follows me. We have frequent conversations.”
Recent Performances
Salah’s last appearance for Liverpool was in a 2-0 victory against Brighton on December 13.
Slot’s Satisfaction
Manager Arne Slot expressed his satisfaction in having Salah back, emphasizing his value after Liverpool’s recent draw against Burnley—a match where they registered 32 shots but managed only a single goal despite a remarkable expected goals (xG) of 2.95. Szoboszlai noted, “That was the first time we played exceptionally well against a low block, creating numerous chances.”
Looking ahead to the match against Marseille, Szoboszlai noted their different style, saying, “They don’t play with a low block. They focus on building from the back, and we need to prepare for that.”
Addressing Criticism
Szoboszlai also responded to negative remarks from Barnsley manager Conor Hourihane, who labeled him “disrespectful” for a failed backheel attempt during an FA Cup match. Hourihane suggested that the midfielder would avoid such risky plays against stronger opponents. Szoboszlai insisted, “It was not meant to be disrespectful. I would have attempted the same against Arsenal or Manchester City.”
Reflecting on his performance, he acknowledged a tough week with a missed penalty in the game against Burnley. Nevertheless, he remained determined, saying, “I’m prepared to take the next one and confident I will score.”
Commitment to Role
Despite the missed penalty being his second in 22 attempts, Szoboszlai is eager to assume penalty duties in Salah’s absence. He noted recent discussions regarding a new contract, which would extend his current deal set to expire in 2028.
He concluded, “If Salah returns, he will reclaim the penalty responsibilities. I look forward to his advice on how to handle misses, as he has experienced that himself.”
