Leone Stars Arrive in Freetown After Strong Finish to World Cup Qualifiers

Sierra Leone’s national football team, the Leone Stars, arrived safely in Freetown on Tuesday, fresh from a morale boosting 2–1 win over Djibouti in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Casablanca, Morocco.

The result capped off a spirited qualifying campaign for the West African side, who finished third in Group A with 15 points.

While the dream of a World Cup berth slipped away, the Leone Stars showed significant progress under head coach Mohammed Kallon, displaying renewed energy and tactical discipline throughout the series.

Juma Bah and striker Sallieu Tarawallie found the net against Djibouti, sealing Sierra Leone’s fifth win of the campaign.

The squad’s return has lifted the mood in Freetown, where fans are already looking ahead to the next challenge, the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The team will regroup in the coming months as the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) outlines plans for friendly matches and training camps to maintain momentum.

With a growing pool of young talent and a more cohesive unit, the Leone Stars are determined to build on their recent performances and reassert themselves as one of West Africa’s rising football forces.
