Leonardo Bittencourt Shares Insights on Dual Citizenship and His Last Months with Werder Bremen
Leonardo Bittencourt Speaks on His Unique Cultural Background and Final Season with Werder Bremen
An End to a Notable Journey
Leonardo Bittencourt, a long-standing figure in the Bundesliga since 2012, recently shared insights with DFL Digital Sports about his career and personal experiences in football. The midfielder for Werder Bremen has declared that this season will mark his last with the team. Despite a few uncertainties throughout his time at the club, it appears he will leave on a high note.
Embracing His Dual Heritage
Bittencourt has reflected on the unique blend of cultures he embodies. Though he was born in Germany, his roots extend to Brazil through his father, who transitioned to Germany to join VfB Leipzig. This dual heritage has provided Bittencourt with valuable perspectives on both cultures, enriching his life and career.
“I believe the carefree spirit comes naturally to me, likely influenced by my upbringing. We lived Germanically, adhering to their discipline and punctuality at home,” he commented. “I take pride in balancing both cultures; I did not have to choose one over the other.”
This combination is consistently evident in his demeanor, particularly during international competitions where his allegiances are tested.
“I always supported Germany because I played alongside many of those players in youth teams,” he explained. “It’s advantageous that if one team is out of the tournament, I can still root for the other, especially if they reach the finals.”
In a light-hearted moment, he recalled the famous 7-1 defeat of Brazil by Germany, describing it as amusing due to the sheer number of goals scored.
Bittencourt shared insights into his father’s journey as well. Franklin Bittencourt made 39 appearances in the Bundesliga after joining FC Energie Cottbus during a time when the league had fewer international players, making the transition to professional football particularly challenging.
“My dad came to Leipzig in a tough time, without language skills, navigating a new country and a demanding league,” said Bittencourt. “His experiences instilled in me the importance of resilience, especially in the Bundesliga.”
Fans from both Brazil and Germany bring intense passion to football, though their experiences differ.
“Both crowds are deeply devoted. Brazilian supporters often use matches as an escape from daily challenges, while German fans similarly exhibit strong commitment,” he noted.
He added that the vibrant atmosphere before games in Brazil differs from the German approach, emphasizing hard work and structure.
“Brazilian football embraces freedom and expression, contrasting with Germany’s focus on discipline and organization. Yet, both can learn from each other, merging these distinct philosophies.”
A Fitting Farewell to Bremen
As the club enters a crucial phase during the international break, the atmosphere at Werder Bremen has shifted positively following a crucial 1-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg, a key rival for relegation. While this win does not guarantee security, it creates a comfortable seven-point cushion above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining.
Bittencourt has played a significant role in the team’s dynamics, readily stepping up during challenging moments. Under new head coach Daniel Thioune, he has found renewed opportunities and confidence.
“The communication has been excellent; the coach keeps me involved and shares his vision. It’s enjoyable to work together,” he remarked.
His experience is vital in helping the team navigate potential crises. Bittencourt emphasizes a balanced mentality when approaching each match.
“Winning feels better than losing, but it’s essential to maintain composure and focus. Finding the right balance is key; being overly tense or too relaxed won’t help us,” he stated.
Despite the pressures that accompany each game, he reminds his teammates that a single match does not define the season.
“There are many matches left, and whether we win or lose, it’s essential to focus on the points we strive to gain,” he said.
Bittencourt underscored the necessity of physical readiness combined with mental strength in order to navigate the challenges of the league.
“Strong mental preparation is crucial, but physical performance is equally important. Both aspects must coexist for success,” he concluded.
Fortunately, Bittencourt’s contributions should help Werder Bremen maintain their status in the Bundesliga this season. His sole ambition is to conclude his journey with the club positively.
“My ultimate wish is to finish on a high note,” he expressed.
