Rafael Leao Reveals Near Transfer to Inter Milan Before Joining AC Milan
Rafael Leao has disclosed that he was on the brink of transferring to Inter Milan prior to finalizing his move to AC Milan.
The Portuguese forward transitioned from Lille to Milan in 2019.
Leao’s Experience with Transfer Talks
Recalling his journey during a recent episode of the Say Less podcast, Leao shared: “I was just about to join Inter, which was quite surprising. The sporting director at Lille informed me: ‘Rafa, we’re on the verge of selling you to Inter.’ I responded, ‘No, I’ve had a great season, I want to stay for another year to develop further and boost my confidence for the next challenge.'”
Despite his insistence to remain, Leao was informed, “No, this is a significant opportunity for you and us, it’s a substantial amount for the club.” Yet, he stood firm in his decision against the Inter move.
The Shift to AC Milan
Leao continued: “Weeks passed, and then the director approached me again, stating, ‘Milan has shown interest in you.’ I said, ‘Absolutely, if they make an offer, I’m ready to accept.'”
“Two days later, he returned with the news that they had made an offer and that someone wanted to speak with me. He connected me to Paolo Maldini—not just a regular call, but a video call. Maldini said, ‘You need to come; we’re prepared to sign you.’ I accepted immediately; it was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”
What Made AC Milan Appealing?
When asked why he chose AC Milan, Leao explained, “Since my childhood, I’ve admired players like Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Kaka, and Seedorf. They are part of football history. Plus, with seven Champions League titles, only Real Madrid surpasses them. When comparing AC Milan and Inter, AC Milan would always win in my heart.”
