Laporta Reveals Ambitious Plans for Messi Statue at Camp Nou in Barcelona
A Heartfelt Visit
Messi, age 38, made a sentimental return to Barcelona on Sunday to explore the newly renovated stadium for the first time since departing the club in 2021. He later shared on Instagram his desire to
come back one day, not merely to say farewell as a player.
Tribute Plans Underway
During a book launch event in Barcelona, club president Laporta revealed that discussions have already begun regarding a lasting tribute to the Argentine World Cup champion.
Messi is forever associated with Barça, and he knows our doors are always open for him. He deserves the highest form of recognition,
Laporta expressed.
He further added,
He deserves a statue at Spotify Camp Nou, akin to those of Johan Cruyff and Laszlo Kubala. He is among the legendary players who have left an indelible mark on our history. We’ve brought this up in meetings, and we are actively working on it. We aim to secure the family’s approval, as all Barça supporters would agree with this tribute.
Return to Playing Rumors Dismissed
Laporta also brushed aside speculations regarding Messi’s potential return to play for Barcelona, characterizing such ideas as “unrealistic” due to the forward’s contract with MLS team Inter Miami, which he renewed last month.
Messi, who was inducted into Barcelona’s academy at just 13 years old, netted 672 goals across 778 matches, leading the team to an impressive tally of 10 LaLiga championships, four Champions League titles, and three Club World Cup victories during his two-decade tenure at the club.
Camp Nou Reopening
After undergoing renovations for nearly 900 days, Camp Nou welcomed fans back on Friday for an open training event which saw over 20,000 attendees. Laporta mentioned that the club aspires to organize “the most magnificent tribute ever” once the renovation project reaches completion.
