Key Absences from Germany's March International Matches

Said El Mala – 1. FC Köln

Said El Mala has emerged as one of the most promising young talents in the Bundesliga this season.

At just 19 years old, he has made a significant impact, contributing 10 goals and four assists, marking him as a key player for Köln.

The only German player surpassing his goal tally in the Bundesliga this season is striker Deniz Undav.

This impressive performance has attracted attention from major clubs, including Chelsea and Brighton, with Brighton reportedly having multiple offers turned down for the Köln standout.

Last fall, El Mala received a call-up for the national team, but was subsequently sent back to the under-21 squad by coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Recently, the dynamic winger, known for his speed, has strengthened his case for selection by starting five of Köln’s last seven matches after recovering from an injury.

His recent performance has solidified his role not just as a substitute but as a player capable of completing a full match.

Maximilian Beier – Borussia Dortmund

Maximilian Beier has shown remarkable form since December for Borussia Dortmund.

He has recorded 10 goal contributions since matchday 15, making him one of the most in-form strikers in the Bundesliga.

Beier has frequently featured in Germany’s squads recently, notably securing a place for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in his home country.

Despite his promising talent, a sluggish start to this season may have affected his standing within the national team, complicating his chances beyond recency bias.

Karim Adeyemi – Borussia Dortmund

For Karim Adeyemi, the lack of regular starts has led to his omission from Julian Nagelsmann’s March squad.

After missing a match against Wolfsburg in February, he had limited appearances against Köln and only played brief minutes against Atalanta in the Champions League.

However, he made an impact by scoring in a match against Augsburg where he played the full 90 minutes.

Unfortunately, during the first game following the squad announcement, he was substituted at halftime after receiving a yellow card.

Maximilian Mittelstädt – VfB Stuttgart

Maximilian Mittelstädt served as Germany’s starting left-back just two years ago during Euro 2024, until David Raum took over in the knockout rounds.

Since then, Raum has been favored over the Stuttgart player, including in a November match against Slovakia where Raum started in a 6-0 victory.

Stuttgart has regained a form reminiscent of their 2nd place finish in the Bundesliga in 2024, currently holding a Champions League spot.

Mittelstädt has been crucial to this resurgence, having played 25 matches this season.

Yann Aurel Bisseck – Inter Milan

Yann Bisseck has only been capped once for Germany, despite being regarded as one of the nation’s top defensive prospects playing abroad.

His team’s disappointing exit in the Champions League against Bodo/Glimt may be influencing Julian Nagelsmann’s selection decisions.

The German defender was part of a backline that conceded two goals at home, leading to Inter’s elimination from the tournament. Nevertheless, they remain strong contenders in Serie A, sitting at the top with only 24 goals conceded.

Bisseck has appeared 19 times in Serie A for Inter, but his inclusion in the national team might pose a risk for Nagelsmann.
