Ryerson Reflects on Assist After Dortmund’s Victory
Post-Match Insights
“It’s not particularly complicated,” the 28-year-old revealed to Sky Germany following the final whistle. “All I need to do is position the ball correctly. The team members handle the finishing touches. There are also aspects that you might not notice, like the blockers. They perform admirably.”
Humble Acknowledgment
Ryerson was not keen on taking much credit for his contribution to Dortmund’s 4-0 win, specifically his fourth assist during the 84th minute. He provided the corner that led to the goal, which was ultimately credited to Ramy Bensebaini, despite it deflecting off Mainz defender Dominik Kohr.
“I’m not particularly interested in the match ball,” Ryerson commented. “Perhaps if my assist on the fourth goal is officially recognized, I might reconsider. Ultimately, the merit belongs to the goal scorers.”
Celebrating Set Pieces
With three of the four BVB goals originating from set pieces, Dortmund’s head coach Niko Kovac had plenty of reasons to celebrate. He changed the set-piece coaching staff earlier this year, and the team executed their set plays flawlessly, even with main set-piece taker Nico Schlotterbeck unavailable due to suspension.
“We performed well on set pieces during the first half of the season, but we are now mastering it,” Kovac noted during the post-match press conference. “I can’t recall the last time Dortmund excelled in a match with three headed goals. It makes the achievement all the more special.”
