Jose Riveiro Rates PSL Over Egyptian League After Short Al Ahly Spell

Former Orlando Pirates and Al Ahly boss Jose Riveiro has drawn a clear line between the Premier Soccer League and the Egyptian Premier League — and in his view, South Africa’s top-flight sits firmly on top.

Riveiro spent three seasons in the PSL, guiding the Buccaneers through a trophy-laden spell that produced five titles. After leaving at the end of last season, he took charge of Al Ahly, but the club cut ties with him after just three months following an uneven start.

Now back on the market, Riveiro joined Robert Marawa on MSW and unpacked his experience in both leagues. He didn’t hold back.

Riveiro highlighted Egypt’s strict crowd limits as a major factor.

“In Egypt, fans face restrictions. Stadiums only allow about 15% to 20% capacity,” he said. “When you watch Al Ahly matches, supporters fill only the area behind the goals while the rest of the stadium stays empty. Officials explained that the country’s security concerns and pre-war tensions created that situation.”

He then shifted to what sets the PSL apart.

“I enjoy the PSL more,” he said. “The structures work better. The matchday atmosphere feels fuller and more alive. The football also attracts me more — the games open up, teams play with ambition, and coaches don’t rely on deep blocks all the time. The league offers a higher level overall, and as a product, the PSL looks far superior.”

Riveiro continues to weigh up his next move, but his admiration for South Africa’s league remains unmistakable.
