Former Goalkeeper Jose Manuel Ochotorena Passes Away at 64
Former goalkeeper for Real Madrid and ex-coach for Liverpool, Jose Manuel Ochotorena, has passed away at the age of 64.
Ochotorena, who represented Spain and worked under manager Rafa Benitez at Liverpool for three years until his departure in 2007, succumbed to a prolonged illness on Sunday.
Liverpool FC Mourns Loss
Liverpool FC expressed its sorrow through an official statement released on Monday, marking a poignant moment for the club.
“Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former goalkeeping coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena.”
The statement confirmed the news of Ochotorena’s death at 64.
Hailing from San Sebastian, Ochotorena developed through the youth system at Real Madrid, becoming part of the senior team from 1982 to 1988. During his tenure, he secured three La Liga titles, two UEFA Cups, and one Copa de la Liga.
“Our thoughts are with Jose Manuel’s family and friends during this difficult time. RIP Jose Manuel Ochotorena, 1961-2025.”

In addition to Liverpool, both Valencia and Real Madrid released statements expressing condolences following the announcement of his passing. Giorgi Mamardashvili, the current Liverpool goalkeeper, also shared a heartfelt tribute on Monday.
