“Challenging Times” Following Move to Saudi Arabia – Henderson

Overview

Jordan Henderson has expressed that he has encountered “challenging times” since departing Liverpool to join Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, noting he might have made alternate choices.

Departure from Liverpool

The 35-year-old midfielder faced significant backlash for his transfer to Saudi Arabia in 2023, a country known for its stance against same-sex relationships. Henderson was a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights during his time at Liverpool.

Reflection on Past Decisions

After a brief six-month stint in Saudi Arabia, he later moved to Ajax, issuing apologies for any distress caused among fans and the LGBTQ+ community. He missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 but has since returned to the Premier League with Brentford under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Quoting Henderson

“I don’t believe that was the reason for missing out on the Euros,” he commented, affirming his involvement in previous camps before Euro 2024. He reflected on his decision-making, indicating, “In retrospect, yes – perhaps I would opt for different choices.”

“I’m not going to lie, the last couple of years have included some difficult moments. Leaving Liverpool felt akin to a breakup,” he added.

He acknowledged his imperfect nature and admitted to previous mistakes, saying, “I have always aimed to make the right choices.”

Current Status

Henderson has earned 85 caps with the England national team since his debut in 2010. He is included in Tuchel’s squad as they prepare to face Wales and Latvia, confident in his contribution to the team.

“The opinions of the manager, coaching staff, and team members are what truly matter,” Henderson remarked. “They can affirm whether I am just a cheerleader here. I doubt one of Europe’s top managers would select me solely for that purpose.”
