John McGinn's Comeback Gives Aston Villa a Europa League Advantage

Aston Villa’s Europa League Aspirations Strengthened by John McGinn’s Return

Aston Villa’s prospects in the UEFA Europa League have received a significant boost with the return of their captain, John McGinn, who is set to participate in Thursday’s last-16 matchup against Lille.

McGinn has been out of action since January due to a knee injury, missing the last ten matches for Villa. During his absence, the team has recorded only four victories, garnering just eight points from the last seven Premier League encounters.

Press Conference Insights

In a press briefing, manager Unai Emery acknowledged the importance of McGinn’s return. “He is here, which is crucial, and while every player holds significance, his leadership as a captain adds extra value. We are pleased he is back and will aim to help him regain his match rhythm swiftly,” Emery explained. “He could be available to start on Thursday or come on later in the match.”

Despite McGinn’s return, Emery confirmed that the team would still be without defender Matty Cash and midfielders Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans for the trip to Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Cash picked up an injury during Villa’s recent 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the league, while Kamara’s season came to an early end in January due to a knee issue, and Tielemans has also been sidelined since the start of the year due to an ankle injury.

Europa League Performance

In the Europa League’s league phase, Villa finished second to Lyon, achieving seven wins and suffering only one loss across their eight matches.
