Mateta “not in the right mindset” for Forest clash
Crystal Palace striker sidelined
Jean-Philippe Mateta, the forward for Crystal Palace, has been deemed “not in the right mindset” to participate in the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest, according to manager Oliver Glasner. This statement comes as speculation around Mateta’s potential departure from the club intensifies.
AC Milan interest grows
Interest from AC Milan has surged following initial inquiries made in January, with Palace setting a price tag of £40 million, especially after rejecting a £35 million offer from Nottingham Forest. During a press briefing on Friday, Glasner confirmed that Mateta would not make the journey with the team for their match at City Ground, set for Sunday at 14:00.
Manager’s remarks
“It’s not about the transfer situation right now. He is simply not in the right headspace,” Glasner explained. “Playing him would serve no purpose. It’s important to protect both the team and him.”
Mateta’s current situation
At 28 years old, Mateta stands as Palace’s leading scorer this season, boasting eight goals in the Premier League. However, he expressed his desire to leave the club earlier this January.
Glasner’s concerns
“There’s a lot of chatter, speculation, and ongoing distractions,” Glasner noted. “We need every player to be performing at their best, but JP isn’t currently able to focus because of all this outside noise.”
Premier League standings and transfers
Crystal Palace currently occupies 15th place in the Premier League standings. They have already transferred their captain, Marc Guehi, to Manchester City during this winter transfer window, and they are yet to find a suitable replacement.
Looking ahead
Despite Glasner announcing he would be leaving at season’s end, he is confident that the club is actively seeking new players before the transfer deadline on Monday. The club has bolstered its attacking options by acquiring Evann Guessand from Aston Villa on loan, which includes an option for a permanent deal.
Manager’s updates on the transfer activities
“The club is working almost round the clock,” Glasner emphasized. “Marc left two weeks ago, and we have yet to sign anyone. It’s not straightforward as all clubs strive for a successful season, making January transfers particularly challenging. I see the club striving to find replacements for Marc, and we must prepare for any eventual situation regarding JP.”
Future targets
Glasner has indicated that they are preparing for various outcomes, with Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen being a key target in mind.
“To clarify, Mateta might remain a Palace player on February 2, or it could be that he leaves the club, and we bring in a new striker,” he mentioned. “These are the two scenarios currently being discussed.”
Palace had also considered a £50 million offer for the Norwegian forward, Strand Larsen; however, recent developments have cast uncertainty over that potential deal as the club has signaled they might withdraw their pursuit.
Wolves manager Rob Edwards confirmed that the 25-year-old Larsen is ready to feature in their match against Bournemouth this Saturday.
