Jason McAteer’s Insight: Is Gerrard Right to Rejoin Rangers Amid Wirtz’s Challenges at Liverpool?

Liverpool Legend Jason McAteer Critiques Manager’s Decision on Wirtz in Chelsea Match
Jason McAteer, a celebrated former player for Liverpool, expressed his belief that manager Arne Slot made a mistake by not including Florian Wirtz in the starting lineup during the recent loss to Chelsea.
The German forward has faced challenges since joining Liverpool and found himself on the bench for the match at Stamford Bridge.
However, McAteer argues that the encounter with Chelsea was a prime opportunity for the summer acquisition from Bayer Leverkusen to shine.
When asked about Wirtz’s role within Slot’s tactical setup, McAteer chuckled and commented, “What system are we actually using? He’s played on the right, taken on the false number nine role, and even been utilized on the left against Crystal Palace. At this stage, it seems like we’re just trying different options. It’s curious that he didn’t get to play against Chelsea, as I believed it would have been a perfect match for him.”
“Considering where the teams are standing right now, I anticipated an open game since both sides would be eager for a victory. Each manager is under pressure following a series of losses, and I thought this game would reflect that. It turned out to be quite exciting.
“It’s unfortunate the result went against us, but I genuinely thought it was a match made for him, and he showed that as a substitute in the second half. He energized the game, making Liverpool look more competitive. I would definitely have started him upfront.”
McAteer Discusses Gerrard’s Potential Return to Rangers
In other news, McAteer’s former captain at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard, is reportedly close to a second spell as manager of Rangers.
When asked if Gerrard should consider going back to Rangers, McAteer replied, “It’s almost like coming full circle; Steven established a formidable team there. When he reaches out and wants to bring in someone like Ryan Kent or other players he worked with from Liverpool’s U21 squad, it makes sense.”
“He has a strong coaching staff around him, including Tommy Culshaw, who has plenty of experience. Steven is a significant figure for the club and has a strong personality, which is often what a club needs as a point of representation.”
“Previously, Graham Souness brought them immense success in the ’90s by making a similar return, and Steven managed to break the Celtic dominance during his first term, earning him legendary status. Unfortunately, as many fans suspected, he eventually moved on, but I believe he could return and achieve the same success.”
