Inter Milan Targets Goalkeeper Succession
Potential Successor for Sommer
The Nerazzurri are on the hunt for a long-term replacement for Yann Sommer, whose contract is set to expire next summer, potentially leading to his departure.
Atubolu’s Impressive Progress
Inter Milan has added German goalkeeper Atubolu to their list of targets, following his outstanding development in the Bundesliga.
- The 23-year-old played a crucial role in Freiburg’s qualification for the Europa League last season, participating in 84 matches for the club.
- Recently, he made headlines by establishing a new Bundesliga record for saving five consecutive penalties.
- Additionally, Atubolu served as the primary goalkeeper for the German team that finished as runners-up in the European Under-21 Championship earlier this year.
Call-Up to National Team
Julian Nagelsmann has called him up to the German national squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures, stepping in for Oliver Baumann.
Discussions on a Deal
Atubolu’s contract runs until June 2027, and Inter Munich plans to arrange meetings with his representatives to discuss a possible transfer.
Reinforcing the Goalkeeping Position
Inter’s manager, Cristian Chivu, is keen on strengthening the goalkeeping department after expressing dissatisfaction with Sommer’s performance during a recent 5-4 defeat against Juventus.
Chivu has subsequently promoted Josip Martinez as the starting goalkeeper for the following league matches against Sassuolo and Cagliari, aiming to adopt a shared playing time strategy between Sommer and Martinez this season.
Sommer’s Uncertain Future
Earlier this summer, Sommer received an offer from Turkish club Galatasaray; however, the transfer did not materialize. With the increasing uncertainty surrounding his future, the Swiss goalkeeper may be facing an exit at the end of the season.
Additional Targets
In addition to Atubolu, Inter Milan is also considering Cagliari’s Elia Caprile and Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi as potential candidates for the goalkeeping position.
