Guardiola Expresses Desire for Silva to Remain at Man City

Manager’s Wish for Silva’s Future

Pep Guardiola has expressed his strong hope that Bernardo Silva will “finish his career” with Manchester City, but acknowledges that the ultimate decision rests with the player himself.

Situation Surrounding Silva

Recently, assistant Pep Lijnders hinted at the likelihood of Silva’s nine-year tenure at the club concluding this summer, remarking that “every good story comes to an end.”

The 31-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season and has attracted interest from clubs like La Liga’s Barcelona, Serie A giants Juventus, and several teams in Major League Soccer.

However, Guardiola indicated that there may still be a chance for Silva to extend his stay, as the Portuguese star has not yet communicated his intentions regarding his future.

Guardiola’s Thoughts on Silva’s Decision

“I’m quite annoyed with Bernardo because I told him a month ago, ‘if you make a decision, I want to be the first to know’, but he hasn’t said anything,” Guardiola commented.

He added, “The choice really lies with Bernardo, and I don’t know if he has made a decision yet. I teased him by saying, ‘let me know, I deserve that,’ but he hasn’t told me anything, so I’m in the dark.”

Reflection on Silva’s Contribution

Guardiola’s remarks came after Lijnders made his comments following City’s decisive 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool, with Guardiola absent due to a touchline ban.

“You cannot simply replace a player with an equivalent, as they don’t exist,” Lijnders stated. He went on to hope that Silva enjoys his final weeks at the club and receives a suitable farewell.

Silva, who joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017, made his 450th appearance during the recent EFL Cup win over Arsenal. He was appointed club captain last summer after Kevin De Bruyne’s departure.

Guardiola also noted, “He may not be the tallest or the most powerful, nor rack up numerous goals or assists, yet these aren’t the types of players that genuinely receive the spotlight.”

The City manager praised Silva for his exceptional competitiveness and ability to perform under pressure, emphasizing that he has been an outstanding signing for the club. “I love this club and would cherish it if he stays to wrap up his career here, but ultimately, the decision lies with him.”
