Mainz 05 Coach Urs Fischer Discusses Remarkable Transformation
In an upcoming interview featured in the Monday edition of Kicker, head coach Urs Fischer of Mainz 05 shares insights on how he transformed a struggling Bundesliga team into a European contender. Under his guidance, Mainz is not only competing as a quarterfinalist in the Conference League but also stands a chance to secure a European spot next season through their Bundesliga performance.
Turning Point for Mainz 05
Took over from the dismissed Bo Henriksen in early December, Fischer found the team languishing at the bottom of the Bundesliga with only six points. After helping the squad secure draws against Bayern Munich and St. Pauli, Fischer guided his team to eight points by the winter break. Since then, Mainz has soared, gathering 25 points in the 2026 calendar year and climbing to ninth place in the standings.
Current Standing and Relegation Concerns
With 33 points and six matches left in the season, Mainz appears to be in a strong position to avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. However, Fischer refrained from expressing the same confidence as Steffen Baumgart, coach of his former club, Union Berlin, who believes his team is safe at 32 points after 28 matches.
Fischer’s Perspective on the Relegation Battle
Fischer emphasized that merely having one point more than Union Berlin is not sufficient. It’s crucial to note that this interview was conducted prior to Mainz’s recent victory against Champions League hopefuls Hoffenheim. Following this win, the team’s outlook has certainly improved, having taken points from several strong opponents since Fischer’s arrival.
Commitment to Continuity in the Fight for Survival
“I don’t regard my tenure here as a success just yet,” Fischer remarked. “While we’ve achieved and improved results, the struggle for survival continues. If Kicker’s analysis omits Mainz from the relegation battle, I find that hard to comprehend. The situation may have improved, but we remain in a fight for survival, and no accomplishments have been secured yet.”
“It’s a cliché, but we must focus on one match at a time. While we strive for survival in the league, we’re also working towards success in international competitions. We are aware of our reality and differentiate ourselves from external evaluations,” he added.
Fischer Reflects on His Early Matches
Fischer remarked, “Initially, it was about minor adjustments and creating a stable organization on the field. We achieved that quite well in the 1-1 draw against Lech Poznan. Our subsequent draw against Bayern, 2-2, is potentially worth more than a victory in another game, and we then secured our place in the Conference League’s round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Samsunspor.”
“There was a growing sense of confidence,” he continued. “No meeting or motivational talk can replace the boost that results provide. Our 0-0 draw against St. Pauli before the winter break reinforced our morale, making it vital to enter the short break on a positive note. Overall, we aimed for stability without making too many drastic changes.”
Fischer on Coaching Philosophy and Modern Football
“Today, compactness and organization are key elements in football,” Fischer stated. “The traditional, all-or-nothing approach has largely faded. Nowadays, teams, regardless of size, can pose significant challenges if they are well-organized. Compactness is essential for success.”
Fischer also expressed how the coaching landscape has evolved: “Communication has increased significantly compared to my playing days. The coaching staff has expanded considerably. Where there was once an assistant, a goalkeeper coach, and a fitness coach, now there are multiple analysts, assistants, fitness trainers, physiotherapists, a team manager, and more.”
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of expertise: “Each specialist in their respective area should be granted the freedom to operate fully. Data serves as an additional resource, but should not be the sole determining factor. My own assessment of a player’s abilities remains paramount.”
