Mainz 05 Remains Grounded Despite Thrilling Win Against Eintracht Frankfurt

Mainz 05 is maintaining a serious outlook following their dramatic last-minute triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt. Key players, Captain Silvan Widmer and goal-scorer Paul Nebel, both stressed that the battle for survival in the Bundesliga is still ongoing.

Widmer: “The mission isn’t complete yet!”

After the game, Mainz’s captain expressed a cautious perspective, emphasizing that while the win was significant, it doesn’t ensure their safety.

“The task in the Bundesliga isn’t concluded yet – we still have several steps ahead,” Widmer stated. “While today’s match was impressive, survival remains unguaranteed.”

Widmer also acknowledged the difficulties faced during a challenging season, where Mainz is juggling domestic leagues with European commitments.

“From the outset, we knew this would be a demanding year due to all the Conference League fixtures. Resetting our minds has not been easy,” he elaborated. “But currently, we are on a promising streak – we need to keep this momentum going.”

Reflecting on the pivotal goal, Widmer recognized the collective effort that led to their late strike.

“Kaishu Sano performed an excellent dribble, my cross was solid, and it reached Nelson Weiper. Fortunately, Paul was positioned perfectly – he’s been in great form lately, especially after facing a tough spell,” he added.

Nebel: “A monumental victory for us!”

Nebel, who played a crucial role by scoring twice, highlighted the importance of this victory for the team.

“Above all, winning today was crucial. It has been a fantastic week for us, and I’m thrilled I could make a contribution,” he mentioned.

The young midfielder underscored the team’s resolve in their struggle against relegation:

“At this moment, our desire to succeed is strong. Today represented a positive advancement. We all feel it – we want to survive as a unit.”

Nebel also reflected on his resurgence after a tough phase earlier in the season.

“The key is to keep pushing forward and not let your spirits sink, even when challenges arise or when you’re not getting much game time,” he articulated. “That’s what I aimed to do, even in moments of frustration. I’m really delighted with how things have turned around.”

Discussing his initial goal, Nebel credited teammate Nadiem Amiri: “Sometimes you need to force things. Nadiem encouraged me to take more shots – that stayed in my mind.”
