“We Must Wake Up” – Szoboszlai on Liverpool’s Challenges

Another Late Setback for Liverpool

Liverpool is experiencing a familiar frustration this season, having dropped points yet again due to a last-minute equalizer. This time, it was Richarlison who scored to secure a 1-1 draw against a struggling Tottenham side, preventing Liverpool from climbing into the top four.

Fans showed their discontent, booing the players off the pitch as the realization of a missed opportunity set in.

“I feel deflated,” expressed Dominik Szoboszlai, who opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 18th minute. “We need to wake up because if we keep going like this, we might as well be satisfied with the Conference League. I genuinely don’t understand why this is happening.”

Szoboszlai reflected on the issue of conceding goals late in matches, something Liverpool has faced throughout the season. This particular incident marked the eighth time this season they have allowed a goal after the 90th minute, a record for a single campaign. Each of these goals has resulted in lost points.

Points Lost Due to Late Goals

How many additional points could Liverpool have secured if they hadn’t conceded late in games?

In over 25% of their Premier League matches, the Reds have given up either an equalizing or losing goal in stoppage time. Out of these, five resulted in losses, including games against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Manchester City, and Wolves. Three matches resulted in draws, with the recent match against Tottenham joining games against Leeds and Fulham.

Notably, Liverpool has managed to win three matches with late goals but has faced significant struggles towards the end of games this season. Without these late concessions, they would currently be sitting on 60 points and would most likely have a Champions League spot secured. Instead, they find themselves in fifth place, only a point above Chelsea.

“This is a significant disaster concerning Champions League qualification,” remarked former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. “With teams like Aston Villa and Manchester United playing against each other, opportunities to gain ground were there.”

Arne Slot, the Reds’ manager, acknowledged the issue, stating, “We have allowed too many goals, and it is affecting our points tally.”

Liverpool’s defensive issues extend beyond just the last moments of games, having allowed 15 league goals from the 75th minute onward—more than any other team this season.

Who is to Blame?

What is contributing to these late game collapses, and why have performances declined since winning the Premier League title last season?

“This was an awful display given the team we were up against,” Carragher commented. “The central issue is whether this is down to the manager or the squad’s makeup.”

Manager Slot noted that the causes of late goals vary, explaining that situations are not always the same, and indicated the difficulty of consistently defending against late-game attacks.

“Today we lost again in stoppage time after we had a chance to increase our lead,” Slot said. “The nature of the goals we concede cannot always be linked. This season has not been surprising in this regard.”

Both Slot and Szoboszlai sympathized with the frustration of the supporters, especially ahead of their next Champions League challenge. However, Slot emphasized the need for support during tough times, indicating that he believes the crowd will rally behind the team if they deliver an improved performance.

Bright Spot in Ngumoha

Amid the disappointment, 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha provided a glimmer of hope with his impressive performance in his first Premier League start. He achieved a significant milestone by completing more than seven dribbles in a match, a feat last accomplished by Matheus Cunha in May 2023.

Before this match, Ngumoha had already made a substantial impact from the bench and in cup competitions this season. Slot praised his development, indicating that performances like this will earn him more playing time.

“This performance signifies that he deserves more opportunities,” said Slot. “He’s one of the players in our squad who continues to deliver strong performances.”

In summary, Liverpool’s recent string of late-game failures raises concerning questions about their consistency and future performance in the league. With critical matches on the horizon, including a must-win in the Champions League, the need for improvement is paramount.
