Igor Matanovic (22) of Freiburg Shares Emotions After Defeating Former Youth Team St. Pauli During Relegation Battle

Matanovic’s Impact in Freiburg vs. St. Pauli Clash

Freiburg forward Igor Matanovic aimed for a constructive performance rather than outright vengeance against his former team St. Pauli during their recent match.

A Tough Outcome for St. Pauli

Despite his notable two-goal effort, which he chose not to celebrate, Matanovic’s contribution only deepened the disappointment for St. Pauli, a team currently battling to avoid relegation.

Matanovic’s Path with St. Pauli

Matanovic’s story began in 2010 when he joined the youth academy of St. Pauli at the age of seven. Like many young players in Germany, he served as a ball boy on match days. He made his debut for the St. Pauli senior team in the 2020/21 season of the 2. Bundesliga.

In the summer of 2021, Eintracht Frankfurt recognized Matanovic’s potential and acquired him for €1.8 million. However, they chose to send him back to St. Pauli on a two-year loan to help him develop further, where he managed to find the net twice.

Matanovic’s Ascension

Matanovic’s breakthrough came during the 2023/24 season while on loan at Karlsruher SC, showcasing his capabilities in the second tier. Last year, he registered two goals in 25 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt in all competitions, indicating his potential yet highlighting a struggle for consistent impact.

Nevertheless, Frankfurt retained confidence in his abilities, protecting their investment with a buyback clause when they transferred him to Freiburg. With Matanovic maintaining a robust scoring run that he started earlier this year, it’s likely this clause will be activated.

His market value has surged by €3 million recently, now standing at €10 million.

Reflections on His Previous Club

“It was a significant match for me,” Matanovic expressed in a post-match interview. “Having spent 13 years here was a pleasure. I attended games as a young boy and was a ball boy myself. The warm reception I received from the fans was heartwarming, and I genuinely appreciate that.”

He added, “Yet, today I wore the Freiburg jersey and gave my all for this club. We aimed to build on our previous momentum, but unfortunately, we fell short. My first goal was somewhat fortunate, as the ball landed in the right spot for me.”

Praise from Freiburg’s Head Coach Julian Schuster

“Igor chose to come to us from Eintracht, and we had to be patient as he adapted to our system,” commented SC Freiburg coach Julian Schuster at the post-match conference. “Over the past six months, he’s made remarkable progress, especially in his defensive contributions.”

Schuster continued to highlight Matanovic’s strengths, remarking, “His skill in tight situations and ability to maintain possession are crucial, and his natural goal-scoring instinct has proven beneficial for the team.”

Schuster Acknowledges St. Pauli’s Quality

Schuster also expressed admiration for St. Pauli, remarking, “We’re thrilled to have triumphed against a team that has been showing strong performances recently. They possess talent, and we were fortunate to secure a comeback victory.”

He concluded with hopeful sentiments about St. Pauli’s future, stating, “I truly wish to play here again next year. This stadium, the club, and the fans are exceptional. I believe St. Pauli has what it takes to secure their place in the Bundesliga next season.”
