Nigeria forward Ifeoma Onumonu ended her football career on Saturday, closing a journey that lasted more than ten years.

The 31-year-old announced her decision on Instagram, calling it a “natural conclusion” to her lifelong passion for the game.

She began playing football at eight years old and always focused on running fast and scoring goals.

“I loved playing football more than anything,” she wrote, thanking everyone who supported her throughout her career.

Onumonu achieved success at both club and international levels during her career.

She won the NWSL Championship in the United States and represented Nigeria in major tournaments.

Her Super Falcons debut came in 2021, and she helped Nigeria win a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in 2025.

She also played at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Although she only featured in the group stage against Algeria in the 2025 AFCON, she remained a key member of the squad.

Her experience and leadership supported veterans like Tochukwu Oluehi, Osinachi Ohale, and Francisca Ordega.

Onumonu began her club career with Boston Breakers and later joined Portland Thorns, Reign FC, Utah Royals, and NJ/NY Gotham FC.

She also played for Montpellier HSC in France, further expanding her career in Europe.

She started her international career with the United States U-23 team before switching to represent Nigeria.

Onumonu expressed gratitude to teammates, coaches, medical staff, and fans for their constant support.

She hinted at a future role in football beyond playing, promising to stay involved in the sport.

Her retirement ends a remarkable career that inspired many young Nigerian players to follow their dreams.
