HSV Gains Advantage in Relegation Fight
HSV has established a slight buffer in their battle against relegation. Following a 2-1 victory away at VfL Wolfsburg, they now hold a nine-point lead over the first relegation position.
Hope for Survival
With just nine matchdays remaining in the season, the prospect of remaining in the league appears promising. However, Lothar Matthäus asserts that HSV still faces challenges ahead.
In the sports program Sky90, the Sky expert evaluated the current state of the Hamburg squad, stating, “They undoubtedly need a few more points,” as the season nears its conclusion. Despite this, Matthäus believes HSV is making progress.
Positive Team Development
Matthäus has taken note of the team’s growth. “The squad is cohesive, and the coach is a good fit,” he remarked, highlighting coach Merlin Polzin’s local connection. After experiencing tough times early in the season, the team has shown significant improvement. Since the beginning of the second half of the season, HSV has only been defeated by top teams, losing narrowly to Leipzig (1-2) and Leverkusen (0-1).
Strong Foundations
Overall, Matthäus views the historic club’s trajectory as encouraging: “In my view, HSV has now established a solid footing, proving in 2026 after initial challenges that they merit their place in the Bundesliga, and they possess the capability to compete effectively.”
However, complete safety is not yet assured. The margin over the relegation playoff position stands at a slim five points. Matthäus remarked, “I anticipated it would be more challenging, but they have garnered enough points to suggest they are out of the direst situation for now.”
Upcoming Challenge
HSV’s next opportunity to further secure their league standing will be on Saturday when they face 1. FC Köln in a crucial matchup. A victory would enable HSV to pull eight points clear of the fourteenth-placed team from the cathedral city.
