Howe Discusses Newcastles Transfer Strategy While Cautious of Glasners Palace

Newcastle United Manager Discusses January Transfer Plans Ahead of Crystal Palace Match

Newcastle United’s head coach, Eddie Howe, addressed inquiries about the club’s transfer strategies for January this morning, as he prepared for Sunday’s matchup against Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.

Manager’s Insights on Financial Constraints

Howe acknowledged that Newcastle is currently managing the Premier League’s Profit & Sustainability regulations, indicating that a “big-name signing” is unlikely in the near future. He remarked, “We have spent considerable time discussing the PSR, and it’s that time of year again. When we talk about marquee signings, we’re generally referring to significant financial investments, which I don’t believe will be our focus this month.”

“Any acquisition we make during this window will limit our capacity to operate in the summer, so it’s crucial we proceed with caution. Our injury status will influence our decisions. If all players are healthy, we possess a well-rounded squad. However, if we lose key players, particularly in defense, the situation will change.”

Update on Will Osula’s Future

Eddie Howe was also questioned about rumors concerning young striker Will Osula’s desire to leave the club this transfer window.

“I do not expect Will to move,” stated Howe. “The only scenario in which we would consider that option would be for his personal development, and always with the intent for him to return here.”

He indicated that Osula is currently sidelined due to injury, with hopes that he could be fit again by the month’s end. “He has expressed frustration as he was performing well before getting hurt. As always, a decision will be made for each player in due course,” Howe added.

Preparing for a Tough Match Against Crystal Palace

As Newcastle prepares to confront Crystal Palace, Howe emphasized the importance of respecting Oliver Glasner’s squad. He has been impressed by the Austrian manager’s achievements.

“This will be a challenging match; their away form is very impressive,” Howe stated. “They are defensively strong and tough to score against, and I hold Oliver’s work in high regard. Although they have lost a few key players, they remain a formidable team that we must not underestimate, and we will not. Being at home gives us a boost, but it’s essential that we approach this game with the right mindset.”

“Any home fixture is advantageous for us. We have demonstrated solid performances at home for a long time. By minimizing travel during such a demanding schedule, we can enhance our prospects. January is a pivotal month for us, and we need to start it on a positive note.”

Newcastle currently ranks 13th in the Premier League, but Howe noted that they are just four points shy of breaking into the top five.

“This season has been challenging thus far, but the margin for improvement is narrow. If we can string together some wins, things could change rapidly. We are at a critical juncture, and I have identified this month as crucial for our season, with several exciting challenges ahead across various competitions.”

Injury Updates on Returning Players

Howe informed that Sven Botman and Anthony Elanga are both close to returning but will not be available for the match against Palace.

“Both are nearing a comeback. Sven has been training with the team, which is encouraging, and I expect him to be involved soon. Anthony hasn’t started training yet but should be on the verge of doing so,” Howe explained.

“Emil Krafth is further behind in his recovery, but the others are progressing well. We have a couple of training sessions left, and Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier have been impressive, putting themselves in a good position for selection. Lewy Miley was outstanding against Burnley, and having a few full-backs back will certainly strengthen the team.”

Additionally, regarding Lewis Hall, who left the pitch during the victory at Burnley, Howe expressed confidence, stating, “He should be fine. We’ll assess him closely today, but I don’t foresee it being a significant concern. Lew is technically skilled and plays as an attacking defender, and he’ll continue to improve with more match experience.”
