Despite a challenging start in their European journey against Hibernian in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, Midtjylland has surprised many by claiming the top spot after three matches in the competition.

Though Hibs showcased commendable performances in their encounters, losing only due to an incredible last-minute bicycle kick by Junior Brumado at Easter Road, Midtjylland’s display back in July was relatively lackluster.

However, they have since turned things around, losing only once this season. Their impressive run included overwhelming victories against Fredrikstad (5-1) and KuPS (6-0) to secure their place in the league stage.

They drew 1-1 against Aarhus, who currently lead the domestic league, maintaining a tight gap of just two points. This indicates that the team Celtic will encounter on Thursday has developed a strong momentum.

Shifts and Changes Within the Team

So, what has led to this transformation? The first notable change is the managerial shift.

Mike Tullberg, previously on loan from Hearts, has taken over as head coach after Thomas Thomasberg’s dismissal, who, despite an unbeaten record, was replaced shortly after guiding the team into the Europa League. Tullberg, who previously spent six years with Borussia Dortmund focusing on various youth teams, was brought in for his reputation in developing young talent while ensuring favorable results, according to football director Jacob Larsen.

His tenure began with a narrow 1-0 loss against Nordsjaelland, their only defeat to date. Following that, Tullberg switched the formation from a four-man to a three-man defense, a strategy they have consistently employed since—except during their Europa League opening victory against Sturm Graz.

Since that defeat, Midtjylland has achieved ten victories, with a statement win being a thrilling 3-2 triumph against Nottingham Forest, helping to curtail Ange Postecoglou’s time in charge.

Key Players: Franculino, Osorio, and Simsir as Threats

Beyond the formation changes, personnel adjustments have also shaped the team’s dynamics post the Hibs match.

Young centre-back Ousmane Diao and forward Gue-Sung Cho have returned from injury and illness, respectively, reclaiming their places. Goalkeeper Elias Olofsson, who stepped in during the tight matches against Hibs, has retained his starting position.

The club has also invested in talent; Croatian defender Martin Erlic joined from Bologna for approximately £4.4 million and has been part of the squad, while Philip Billing, arriving for a similar fee from Bournemouth, has quickly cemented his place in midfield after a loan spell at Napoli last season.

The existing roster features young attacking talents like Dario Osorio and Aral Simsir, alongside Franculino, a prolific striker boasting 17 goals in 24 matches this season. The combination of these players has significantly contributed to Midtjylland’s elevated standing in the Europa League.

The team has remained unbeaten at home since March, with 13 wins in their last 17 games following a loss to Brondby. Therefore, Celtic faces a considerable challenge in extending their winning streak under Martin O’Neill.
