Historic Achievement: Tiny Nation Secures World Cup Berth Under Former Bundesliga Coach
Curaçao Makes History With World Cup Qualification
While much of Europe was fast asleep, history was being created in Central America regarding the World Cup.
Curaçao Achieves World Cup Qualification
Curaçao has made its mark by securing a spot in the football World Cup for the first time in the nation’s history, thanks to a 0-0 draw against Jamaica.
The team, led by former Bundesliga manager Dick Advocaat, now holds the distinction of being the smallest nation by population to qualify for a football World Cup.
Population Statistics Highlight Achievement
Official statistics reveal that Curaçao, an island renowned for its signature cocktail, is home to just under 150,000 residents. This achievement is particularly significant as it surpasses Iceland, which previously held the record for the smallest nation to qualify since the 2018 World Cup in Russia; Iceland’s current population is reported to be roughly 390,000.
Additional Teams Joining the Celebration
Curaçao wasn’t the only nation celebrating its qualification that night; both Panama and Haiti will also be partaking in the tournament next year.
