Helguera Criticizes Real Madrids Misstep in Dismissing Xabi; Calls Arbeloas Appointment Ridiculous
Helguera Discusses Xabi Alonso’s Dismissal and Arbeloa’s Appointment
Helguera’s Take on Xabi Alonso’s Exit
In a recent conversation with his former teammate Iker Casillas on the podcast Bajo Palos, defender Helguera expressed his discontent with the decision to let Xabi Alonso go. He acknowledged that while he wasn’t fond of the team’s playing style, particularly on defense, they proved to be a formidable opponent.
Concerns about Timing
“I believe that by February or March, they should have showcased how they were progressing. I have confidence that they could have secured victories against Albacete and Lisbon,” he stated. Helguera criticized the club’s quick decision to part ways with Alonso, emphasizing that it seemed premature.
Moreover, he noted that the team lost the Super Cup in a match where they performed reasonably well. “However, we had our doubts for three months leading up to this,” he added.
Reflections on Arbeloa’s Appointment
When discussing Alvaro Arbeloa, Alonso’s successor, Helguera pointed out that Arbeloa, who previously coached Castilla, should have earned his opportunity based on merit. “Raúl spent numerous years managing the reserve team without being elevated,” he explained, expressing skepticism about Arbeloa’s sudden promotion.
He highlighted the irony of Arbeloa’s appointment, noting that on the very same day he was selected, his Castilla team lost 4-1 in the Primera RFEF. “It all seems like a series of nonsensical decisions. Nothing adds up. In my view, dismissing Xabi Alonso was illogical,” Helguera concluded.
