Heidenheim's Frank Schmidt Reflects on Stellar Bundesliga Display Without Gaining Points: "No Style or Grace Points Like in Figure Skating"

FC Heidenheim Struggles Continue in Bundesliga

FCH Remains at the Bottom of the Table

FC Heidenheim is still positioned last in the Bundesliga standings after suffering a defeat against Augsburg during their away match this weekend. Following the team’s fourth successive loss, head coach Frank Schmidt displayed a surprisingly optimistic demeanor compared to his previous remarks.

In reference to the close 1-0 loss, which was decided by a late penalty, the coach expressed a more positive outlook regarding his squad’s performance.

Coach’s Insights on the Match

“I think we can feel a bit unfortunate considering the overall game,” Schmidt remarked in his initial comments. “The first half was quite balanced, and we gradually found our rhythm, generating opportunities. Augsburg found themselves under pressure for most of the game. We secured numerous important possessions and had several chances to convert.”

Positive Performances Highlighted

“We performed admirably both in and around the penalty area,” Schmidt added. “We should have taken the lead. When you create so many opportunities, particularly with all the space available in and around the box, finishing is essential. After the penalty that came in the 80th minute, the game shifted completely in the final moments.”

In conclusion, Schmidt shared, “Overall, my team showcased a solid and stable performance for an away match. Their body language was commendable, and they improved as the match progressed. However, style points don’t earn you any league points; this isn’t a beauty contest.”

Key Players Making an Impact

Schmidt pointed out some specific chances generated by his players during the match. Two recent signings, Christian Conteh and Eren Dinkçi, made significant contributions. Conteh, who recently recovered from an injury, made his starting debut on the left wing.

Dinkçi played in a deeper midfield role in front of Julian Niehues and Jan Schöppner, effectively acting as a distributor and setting up opportunities for his teammates. Bayern loanee Arijon Ibrahimovic also performed well on the opposite flank.

Additionally, new signing Hennes Behrens actively supported Conteh from the left-back position, while Conteh’s older brother Sirlord, along with striker Marvin Pieringer, made a positive impact when brought on from the bench.

Looking Ahead

“I saw a sense of confidence rather than just hope from my team today,” Schmidt commented at the conclusion of the press conference. “They truly believed they could achieve something today. It wasn’t an easy challenge. I emphasized that they should not dwell on the possible scenarios regarding relegation; the focus was on winning and experiencing success.”

This is not the first occasion where Heidenheim has faced significant challenges and a substantial points deficit, Schmidt noted. “I believe this did not negatively affect our game plan or strategy execution. In all the games this season, we have created more than enough chances to earn more points than the two we have managed to acquire so far.”
