In September 2023, during what he considered a low point in his career—marked by criticism following an own goal in an England match against Scotland—Maguire’s mother Zoe expressed her outrage on social media regarding the treatment her son faced.

“I told her not to, but she insisted, saying, ‘I’m doing this whether you like it or not!'” Maguire reflected, chuckling, while discussing his journey and aspirations at Manchester United’s training center near Dublin.

He acknowledged how the harsh scrutiny impacted his family more than himself, stating, “It’s undoubtedly tough for them to witness my struggles.”

Maguire categorized that moment as the lowest in his professional life but reiterated that such challenges are part of the growth process. “I wouldn’t trade my past for anything; it has fortified me and shaped who I am today.”

While acknowledging his struggles, he believes the focus shouldn’t solely be on those moments. “I feel I’ve excelled in about six out of my seven years at Manchester United,” he remarked with confidence. “Even now, I consider myself among the top defenders globally.”

His insights into his difficulties come in the wake of a contract extension that promises another season at the club, potentially extending his career further.

“The initial reaction to losing the captaincy was frustration and disappointment,” he admitted, reflecting on the decision made by former manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s prior consideration to sell him. Yet he emphasized the importance of resilience: “Every player experiences highs and lows. That’s the nature of the game, which separates the enduring ones from those who fade away.”

He shared insights from legends like Wayne Rooney and David Beckham, learning how they navigated their tribulations. “I just kept focused,” he said, emphasizing his unwavering self-belief as a key factor in overcoming challenges.

Maguire’s Aspiration to Join the World Cup

“It’s an immense privilege to represent this club for eight years,” he noted. “My aim is to contribute to a competitive squad. The recruitment efforts have seen positive strides over the past year, and I feel optimistic about the upcoming season.”

Looking ahead, Maguire noted, “The club had indicated months ago they were interested in extending my contract. Amid matches, I focused on performance, but once there was a pause, I knew I had to finalize this.”

As Manchester United seeks to solidify their position with just seven games left in the season, he remains cautious but hopeful. “Every away game is challenging. If we ease off, we risk being outpaced by teams like Chelsea and Liverpool.”

Maguire has his sights set high, noting, “The squad is gaining strength, but it’s crucial we enhance and expand further. We lack European commitments this year, which puts a strain on the squad.”

When reflecting on the prospect of significant team enhancements, he stated, “I don’t see any limits on what we could achieve. We must be contenders for major trophies in the future.”

He is particularly eager for the upcoming World Cup, stating, “This could be my last World Cup experience. Having participated in two, missing the last Euros due to injury was tough. So, I am eager to contribute in any way the coach sees fit—whether as a starter or to make impactful plays late in matches.”
