Hannibal Mejbri and Wesley Fofana Address Racist Attacks Following Chelsea vs Burnley Match
“Educate Yourself and Your Children” – Fofana and Mejbri Targeted with Racial Abuse
Disgusting Online Abuse Following Match
Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri of Burnley and defender Wesley Fofana of Chelsea have expressed their outrage on social media after both players were subjected to racial abuse following a recent Premier League matchup. The game, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, saw Fofana receive a second yellow card, leading to his ejection.
Fofana shared multiple screenshots of abusive private messages he received on Instagram after the match. In one of his posts, he lamented, “Here we are in 2026, and nothing has changed. These offenders seldom face consequences. Large campaigns against racism are launched, yet no substantial action is taken.”
In response to the hate he received, Mejbri also posted on Instagram, sharing a screenshot of an offensive message and urging others to “educate yourself and your kids, please. It’s 2026 and such behavior still exists.”
Chelsea released a statement expressing their “shock and disgust” over the “horrific” abuse directed at their player, emphasizing their stance that such actions are unacceptable.
A Unified Stand Against Racism
In their statement, Chelsea further remarked: “This kind of behavior is intolerable and goes against the core values of football and our club. We firmly support Wes and all our players who endure such hatred simply for performing their duties. We will collaborate with relevant authorities to identify those responsible and pursue the strongest possible actions.”
Meanwhile, Burnley expressed their horror over the incident, stating they have reported the abusive message to Meta, the parent company of Instagram. They expect robust support from both the Premier League and law enforcement to identify the perpetrator. The club reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, assuring full support to Mejbri and highlighting that Burnley fans have also denounced the abuse.
These incidents of racial abuse are part of a troubling trend observed this season. Just days before this event, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. was also reportedly targeted during a Champions League match, prompting an investigation by UEFA.
Increased Responsibility for Social Media Platforms
The Premier League condemned the abuse and announced that individuals found guilty of discriminatory behavior would face severe penalties, possibly including bans from clubs and legal action. The anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out voiced their solidarity with both Fofana and Mejbri, stressing the necessity of increased efforts to eliminate racial abuse online.
Kick It Out stated, “Football is taking steps to address this issue alongside the UK Football Policing Unit and Ofcom, but social media companies must enhance their protections for players and help ensure accountability in incidents of abuse.”
A spokesperson from Meta responded to the situation, affirming that “no one should be a victim of racist abuse” and that all such content is removed promptly. However, they acknowledged that eradicating racist behavior requires more than just their platform’s measures and reiterated their commitment to working with law enforcement on investigations.
Recent Trends in Racial Abuse
Recent investigations have highlighted a staggering number of abusive posts directed at managers and players in the Premier League and Women’s Super League, revealing over 2,000 extreme forms of online harassment, including death threats.
Notably, a match earlier in the season between Liverpool and Bournemouth was interrupted due to reported racial abuse aimed at Bouremouth forward Antoine Semenyo.
Moreover, multiple players, including Newcastle’s Joe Willock and Tottenham’s Mathys Tel, were also victims of racial abuse in social media incidents. The persistent issues of racism in football demonstrate an urgent need for collective action against such toxic behavior, reinforcing the importance of education and awareness in eradicating racism from sports and society at large.
