Hakim Ziyech is set to officially complete a sensational move to Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca, marking a long-awaited return to his homeland after years in Europe and the Middle East.
The 32-year-old attacking midfielder recently parted ways with Turkish side Galatasaray.
He will join Wydad on a one-year deal with an option to extend for another season.
His comeback represents one of the biggest transfer surprises in African football this year. He was rumored to be on the verge of signing for Romanian side CFR Cluj before the Moroccan giants swooped in.
According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, “Hakim Ziyech to Wydad Casablanca, here we go! Moroccan star back home as both parties finalized the deal today. Ziyech was available as a free agent and after many approaches, he’s ready for a new chapter at Wydad.”
Key figures in Moroccan football reportedly influenced Ziyech’s decision with a strong vision for Wydad’s future.
The former Chelsea and Ajax star will bring vast experience and creativity to the Wydad attack. He won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his time with the Blues.
Ziyech’s imminent arrival comes at a crucial moment for the Casablanca side. They will face Asante Kotoko of Ghana in the CAF Confederation Cup this Friday.
Wydad currently hold a 1–0 lead from the first leg in Accra, and fans are hopeful their returning hero could feature in the decisive clash.
