Gyan Names Nigeria, Ivory Coast, And Morocco As Contenders For 2025 AFCON

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has singled out Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Morocco as the leading contenders for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, set to kick off in Morocco on December 21.

Speaking at the CAF Awards in Morocco, Gyan praised Nigeria’s experience, quality, and consistent performances as reasons they are strong candidates for the title.

He also highlighted defending champions Ivory Coast and hosts Morocco as teams capable of lifting the trophy.

“African football has grown so fast. The competition is tougher now, and that’s why tournaments like AFCON are becoming more exciting,” he said.

“Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Morocco look very strong. They are definitely favourites for the 2025 title.”

Gyan noted Ghana’s absence from the tournament but remained upbeat about the continent’s quality sides. “Ghana is out which we are very disappointed but it is okay we have qualified for the World Cup,” he said.

Nigeria, runners-up at the 2023 edition, will be chasing their fourth AFCON crown, while Ivory Coast aim to defend their championship.

Morocco will rely on home advantage and a talented squad to end their long wait for a second continental trophy.

The 35th edition of AFCON will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, featuring 24 nations vying for Africa’s most prestigious football title.
