Guinea international Serhou Guirassy was Borussia Dortmund’s hero on Friday night, scoring the only goal in their 1-0 triumph over Augsburg to send the German giants second in the Bundesliga.
Guirassy continued to make headlines in Europe after netting his first Bundesliga goal since mid-September.
The Guinean pounced on a defensive blunder just before halftime, controlling the loose ball and smashing it past Finn Dahmen to seal all three points.
The win sets Dortmund up perfectly for their upcoming UEFA Champions League showdown with Manchester City, as they now trail Bayern Munich by just four points.
Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel admitted the side was exhausted following their midweek cup battle. “We played 120 minutes on Tuesday in Frankfurt. You could already tell in Frankfurt how every single player was already at their limit,” he told Sky Germany.
“These types of games are super difficult.”
For Augsburg and their rookie coach Sandro Wagner, the defeat adds to their woes with only one win in their last eight games.
But for Guirassy, the goal marks a return to form and another reminder of Africa’s growing influence in Europe’s top leagues.
